The widespread implementation of organic farming could give Ukrainian farmers a chance to gain a foothold on the European market.
Consumers are no longer as omnivorous as they used to be – they are increasingly thinking about how healthy and safe food in their plates are.
Organic farming: The eco-products market is growing every year
According to international experts’ data, the market for organic products is growing every year and is becoming a new promising sector of agriculture. The supermarkets that sell exclusively organic products are already in existence in the West. In addition, conventional large supermarkets have an assortment of eco-products, which labels describe not only the composition but also the way in which organic farming was carried out. As a result, the consumer has the choice to drink milk from cows that have been injected with hormones or antibiotics, or natural milk, eat apples treated with chemical insecticides, or consume organic products.
Experts believe that the worldwide trend to consume eco-products over the coming years will cover Ukraine as well. And thus, there will be new challenges of the market that the Ukrainian farmer needs to be prepared for.
On average, organic products in the West are 50% more expensive – and that’s fair. After all, using organic farming and growing vegetables and fruits without chemical fertilizers, the farmer agrees in advance to a lower yield. In addition, growing organic products is a small-scale business. As a rule, that kind of products are manufactured by small farming enterprises.
it is interesting that organic farming has recently become very popular in America, allowing to grow organic products in the yard, on the balcony, and even on the windowsill.
If even 10 years ago organic farming – that is, growing products without nitrates, pesticides, hormones and genetically modified organisms – was seen as a whim for affluent people, now more and more Europeans, as well as Ukrainians, while buying a product carefully study an information on the label.
Many public figures in the world have supported the trend toward organic farming. The First Lady of America Michelle Obama grows together with her children organic products in a patch of land near the White House. Hollywood stars such as Julia Roberts and English actress and model Elizabeth Hurley, who has already been dubbed the most beautiful farm girl in the world, also have their own organic farms.
And the British McDonald’s stated that they use only natural and ecological farm milk. Local seasonal organic products are also a trendy menu at many eateries.
Of course, to feed the Earth’s population, the intensive production methods are things we cannot do without. But as analysts say, the organic farming will gain momentum.
